LEAK SEALERS
Leak sealers may be a handy dandy band-aid for small leaks in an A/C system. Some technicians
and do-it-yourselfers may even follow the old adage "if a little works, more will work better".
However, when this band-aid doesn't fix the problem, the next step is usually to take the vehicle to a shop
(yours perhaps) to evacuate the refrigerant from the A/C system and repair the leak. The leak sealer is a
very bad thing when pulled into an A/C recovery machine. It clogs solenoids, valves and other devices.
And, it voids the warranty on the recovery machine.
The first question is "how do I protect my expensive recovery machine". The answer is simple.
Make sure you don't recover refrigerant from any A/C system which has leak sealer in it.
Of course, the next question is "how do I make sure". Here are two methods:
1) Know the history of the vehicle. This is difficult, as the vehicle owner may not know or
may be embarrassed to admit that he is a failed do-it-yourselfer.
2) Check the refrigerant first to determine if it has leak sealer. The RTI Leak Sealer Detector
will perform this test. Do not recover the refrigerant if the test fails.
Here is a link to the RTI Leak Sealer Detector web page.
There is another method which is VERY HIGH RISK in the opinion of RTI:
Installation of a device on your recovery machine which claims to remove leak sealer from the refrigerant.
This method is NOT recommended by RTI since the technology is unproven in our opinion. The risk to you is
the voiding of the recovery machine warranty.
The only sure way to keep leak sealer out of your recovery machine is to not recover refrigerant from any A/C
system which contains it by using Method 1 or 2.
